One of my core beliefs as a choral music educator and director is in the holistic education of singers--that not only can choral music provide them the opportunity to find their singing voice, but rather shape them to be the voices of compassion and change in the future. This holistic education is always centered on fostering a safe, generous space for music-making and sharing, voice pedagogy that utilizes evidence-based practices in voice science, and choral singing with a foundation in musicianship. Such meaningful choral pedagogy provides a pathway for singers across ages, abilities, and diverse lived experiences to share their voices effectively and artistically.
As an educator, academic, private voice instructor, and professional choral musician, I recognize that my work has gone beyond the choral rehearsal, voice lesson, and performance stage. In my teaching career, I have developed age-appropriate curriculum for the musicians in my choirs and voice studio so that they not only become fully trained singers and literate musicians but meet their potentials as thoughtful, disciplined, empathetic artist-citizens. The musicians in my choirs are supported as they seek opportunities using their musical training to educate, connect, and serve their communities.
Choral music is a direct reflection of the values of a community. I am grateful for the excellent music education and voice pedagogy I received in my musical training which convinced me of my own capacity to create similar change in the world through my skills, experience, talent, and hard work. I realize that my life’s work must be in the service of empowering musicians across the lifespan through choral music centered in evidence-based voice pedagogy and inclusive, empathy-centered community.
